Merlot

Franse blauwe druif die over de hele wereld staat aangeplant. Het is het meest aangeplante blauwe ras in Bordeaux en in heel Frankrijk, en wereldwijd nummer 2, na cabernet sauvignon. In de Bordeaux is merlot vooral dominant in appellations als Saint-Emilion en Pomerol. Hij rijpt eerder dan de cabernet en geeft rondere wijnen met minder tannine en zuren. Ook in de rest van de wereld wordt merlot regelmatig gebruikt om cabernet te verzachten. Daarnaast is hij vanwege zijn soepele, fruitige karakter heel geliefd als druif voor cépagewijn (wijn van één druivenras).
